How To Construct 7 Chords

In this lesson you will learn how to construct 7 chords. You will learn how to construct major 7 chords, minor 7 chords and dominant 7 chords. Playing new chord types like major 7 or minor 7 will definitely add more flavor and depth to your guitar playing.

Building a Major Seventh chord

C Major 7

Let us take a C major scale to build a C Major 7 chord.

You can build a C Major 7 Chord by taking the 1st, 3rd, 5th  and 7th notes of the C major scale.

On the guitar the C major 7 chord would look like:

c major 7

C Minor 7 Chord

You can build a C Minor 7 Chord by taking the 1st, flat 3rd, 5th  and flat 7th notes of the C major scale.

On the guitar the c minor 7 would look like:c minor 7

C Dominant 7 Chord

You can build a C7 Chord by taking 1st, 3rd, 5th and flat 7th  notes of the C Major Scale.

C dominant 7

To finish this lesson, let us pretty quickly build a D Major 7 chord, a D Minor 7 chord and a D7 chord.



Building a D Major Seventh chord

D Major 7

Let us take a D major scale to build a D Major 7 chord.

On the guitar the D major 7 would look like:

You can build a D minor 7 Chord by taking the the 1st, flat 3rd, 5th  and flat 7th notes of the D Major Scale.

So there you go, you know know how to construct major 7 chords. Knowing to play major chords is fun and exciting, and by learning and playing new chord types like major 7 chords, minor 7 chords, etc  will make your chords sound more interesting and will take your guitar playing to a whole new level.

Tip: If you want to create major 7 chords on the fly you need to master your major scales and fretboard
